The thumb stop is very useful for teraching beginning pipers to maintain correct position of the thumb on the bottom hand. It is used to train the thumb on your right hand to stay directly behind the middle finger. This will help you have the proper finger placement allowing you to play birls, taorluaths, and grace notes properly.

They are also used by experienced players who wants to work on their technique.
